Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR- Gettysburg]. Rare stereoview of a "Battlefield Vulture" who was caught "Robbing the field and pockets of the dead."
Stereoview on yellow mount featuring a rough-looking man wearing dirty and possibly tattered clothes, and with what appears to be some dirt on his face. Uncredited, but possibly published by Tyson & Tipton. Verso bears ink inscription reading, "561 / A Battle field vulture / Godfor by name / Robbing the field and pockets of the dead."
Another example of this image bears a printed caption describing the man as an "inhuman wretch captured at Gettysburg while turning the pockets of the dead and robbing the field."
Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
