Lot Description
[BUREN, MARTIN VAN (1782-1862)]. 2 legal documents including an ADS by Van Buren as an attorney. 1808-1809.
7 1/2 x 6 1/8 in. manuscript document signed "M. V. Buren Atty." Columbia County, NY, 16 January 1808. Creasing and toning, with some small separations and wear to edges. Docketing to verso. Embossed seal to upper left corner.
Warrant for James Van Vodkenburgh[?], who is ordered to appear in court in Hudson, NY on "the first Monday of June next" to answer to Ezra Don for damages totaling three hundred dollars. Also signed by John Hogeboom as Clerk.
7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. partly printed document signed "M. V. Buren Atty." Columbia County, NY, 9 January 1809. Some creasing and toning. Docketing and additional Van Buren signature to verso. Embossed seal to left side.
Capias warrant for Nicholas Tuttle[?], who is ordered to appear in court on 14 January, answering to James Van Alen and Martin Van Buren for damages totaling twenty dollars. Also signed by M. Jenkins, Jr. as Clerk.

Martin Van Buren and his half brother James Van Alen operated a law practice in Kinderhook and achieved considerable success both financially and in reputation.
