Lot Description
[MEXICO - FRANCE - EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. French family album incl. CDVs of soldiers who participated in the Franco-Mexican War.
5 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. album (closure clasp missing, wear to extremities) containing 30 portraits of French subjects, likely family members, including several CDVs of soldiers in uniform, including Captain Aristide Béguin, who was killed at the Battle of San Lorenzo before Puebla on 8 May 1863. He was a member of the French Foreign Legion. His portrait shows him sitting sideways on a wooden chair, with one leg crossed over the other. Credited on mount recto and verso to Franck of Paris. Two other CDV portraits, both featuring Gustave Béguin, show him in uniform with three medals affixed to his jacket. Both credited to Franck of Paris on mount recto and verso.
Some of the family members are identified in pencil either on the album pages or on the images themselves. Other photographers credited include Jacotin, Ladrey, Dorsand, and Lavallee.
