Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 30 daguerreotypes of children in sixth plate cases.

A pair of sixth plate portraits of cherubic children, seated, housed together in the same pressed paper case (spine repair). (Mild tarnishing and spotting to plates.) -- Sixth plate bust portrait of a young girl with short hair slicked back, wearing an off-the shoulder dress. (Heavy tarnishing to edges, with some spotting throughout, oxidation spots to mat; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear, spine repair). -- Seated sixth plate portrait of a young freckle-faced boy wearing patterned jacket, checkered pants, and an interesting hairstyle. What appears to be a rippled fabric backdrop is blurred in the background. (One notable dent to top of subject's head, some spotting throughout and an area of clouding to lower portion; original seals.) Salmon colored calling card behind image bears the stamped name "A. H. Shalkop" on one side and a blue ink inscription reading, "This picture taken after I had been at Westtown B.S. six months. 17 years old. 1859 J. E. Masters" on the other. -- And 26 others. Some without cases. One appearing to be a possibly smaller plate matted and cased to appear as a sixth plate. Conditions vary. -- Together, 30 daguerreotypes of children.
