[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. Group of 3 newspapers incl. a 1776 Penn. Evening Post and The Salem Gazette.


The Pennsylvania Evening Post. Vol. II, No. 207. Philadelphia: Printed by Benjamin Towne. 18 May 1776. 4pp, 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.

Includes news from around the American Colonies. Boston: "Almost every able bodies inhabitant of this place has voluntarily engaged to work two days in a week, for six weeks, on the fortifications carrying on here for the general defence.... Letters from London, received by last night's mail, mention that seventeen thousand three hundred German troops were going to Boston and Canada...." Also a report of a privateer taking two British brigs near the lighthouse. New York: Arrival of cargo of gunpower and jailing of Tories. Rhode Island: King George III replaced by an Act of the General Assembly with "The Governor and company of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations" in all legal papers. Philadelphia: American reverses before Montreal reported in a letter to Congress, and an appeal to all Philadelphians to turn in lead.

Published after the 1781 Battle of Yorktown, these newspapers contain news related to the Revolutionary War's conclusion and ongoing political matters in both Britain and the United States. References to Cornwallis's surrender, Tories in New York, ongoing naval and maritime matters, John Adams's negotiations at the Hague, and the arrival of Lord Cornwallis and Major General [Benedict] Arnold in London.
