Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate ambrotype of a young doctor with skeleton in painted background.

Crisp seated portrait of a bearded man of medicine, resting his forearm on a volume surmounting the table next to him, and posed before a painted background depicting a bookshelf, mortar and pestle, bottles of liquid, and, most notably, a skeleton hanging from a shelf. (Some small abrasions with image loss, otherwise good clarity.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear).

Apparently, this backdrop was used for other portraits of medical professionals, as we have heard from some collectors that they have seen other examples of this background used in other images throughout the years.
