Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 2 cased images of Union soldiers, incl. a trooper from District of Columbia, 1st Cav.

Sixth plate ruby ambrotype portrait of a seated soldier sporting an 1858 mounted services jacket and armed with a sword and what appears to be a Smith & Wesson No. 2 revolver tucked into his belt. (Some tarnishing and chemical discoloration to image, mostly around edges.) Housed in a Union case (significant nicking/chipping, soiling, loose hinge). Accompanied by a yellow embossed cover addressed "In Haste" to Mr. Martin F. Zimmermann, Co. A, 1st DC Cavalry, at "Camp Near Deep Creek, Va." -- Sixth plate tintype portrait of a soldier standing in uniform including a buff 1839 dragoon belt and 1833 dragoon saber, porkpie hat, and 1858 mounted services jacket. His appearance is suggestive of service in the western theater. (Some scratches, spots, and other imperfections.) Housed in a pressed paper case (separation to spine, surface wear and loss throughout). -- Together, 2 images.

HDS lists Martin Zimmerman as a musician, enlisting on 1 June 1863, and mustering into Company A of the District of Columbia 1st Cavalry Regiment that same day.
