Replica of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello camera obscura, handcrafted in wood, size 6 in. wide x 7 1/2 in. high x 14 in. deep. Signed on underside, "R.W. Lisle, 1979." The viewing glass measures 3 3/8 x 4 5/8 in.

Thomas Jefferson owned at least two camera obscuras in his collection of optical instruments, and this modern replica is inspired by the example that Jefferson purchased from David Rittenhouse in 1794.
