Lot Description
SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). The Works of Shakespear...with a glossary. Carefully printed from the Oxford Edition in Quarto, 1744. Sir Thomas Hanmer, editor. London: Printed for J. and P. Knapton, et al, 1747.
9 volumes, 12mo in sixes (133 x 83 mm). 38 engraved plates, including a portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare after Chandos by G. Van der Gucht. Contemporary half dark olive calf, marbled boards, smooth spines divided into 6 compartments by gilt fillets, gilt-lettering in 2, others with gilt centerpieces, speckled edges (spines evenly sunned with a touch of rubbing at ends, light rubbing to boards). Provenance: early indiscernible ownership signature on title-pages.
Hanmer edited one of the earliest printed editions of Shakespeare's works, published at Oxford between 1743 and 1744 in six volumes. This was later reprinted in 1747 in a smaller duodecimo format but with several more engravings and a glossary, as seen here. Jaggard, p.500.

Contemporary calf, spines in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, gilt-numbering in one (covers worn, some splitting to joints). Provenance: Brent Gration-Maxfield (ownership signature in vol.1 on pastedown). Another copy, but with altered portraits of Shakespeare and the Westminster monument. This set was available in both variations (with these two engravings or with the expanded 38 engravings). Jaggard, p.500.
