Lot Description
SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). The Works of Shakespear in Six Volumes. Carefully Revised and Corrected by the former Editions. Sir Thomas Hanmer, editor. London: J. and P. Knapton, [&c.], 1745.
6 volumes, 8vo (197 x 121 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by G. Duchange after B. Arlaud. (Frontispiece trimmed close, some marginal browning.) Contemporary calf, cover twice ruled in gilt (rebacked to style, covers worn).
Second Knapton edition, reprinted from the 1744 Oxford edition. Sir Thomas Hanmer (1677-1746), a scholar and politician, edited one of the earliest printed editions of Shakespeare's works, published at Oxford between 1743 and 1744 in six volumes. "The print and binding were magnificent, and caused its value to rise to nine guineas, when Warburton's edition was going for eighteen shillings" (Ward, The Cambridge History of English and American Literature).
