Lot Description
FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). Sherwood Anderson & Other Famous Creoles. A Gallery of Contemporary New Orleans. New Orleans: Pelican Bookshop, 1926.
8vo. 40 plates after drawings by William Spratling. Original green paper boards, red printed cover label (rebacked to style). Provenance: Serendipity Books (autograph note from Peter Howard, stating that Carl Petersen did not have this combination of binding); dated gift label on front pastedown.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 247 of 250 copies. FIRST ISSUE, without the pasted over second colophon slip. Although the limitation statement records only 250 copies, Petersen notes that 400 were actually produced. Of these, the first 50 were hand-tinted by Spratling followed by 200 uncolored copies numbered through 250. The remaining 150, issued as a second state, bear an added label pasted over the printed limitation.
"This book of caricatures by William Spratling is included as a Faulkner book because he 'arranged' it; and the text, save for the captions, consists entirely of his Anderson-parody introduction" (Petersen). ibid A3.1a.
