Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 28-star American flag. Ca mid-19th century.
Approx. 53 x 99 in. flag with 28 double-appliquéd cotton stars hand sewn to a cotton canton, configured in vertical rows 4/5/5/5/5/4, with 13 hand-sewn cotton stripes. Red jute rope runs through hoist end.
A scarcely encountered flag commemorating the statehood of Texas, which was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on 29 December 1845.
Provenance: Acquired from the estate of descendants of Civil War officer, John D. Muir, 21st and 144th Ohio Volunteer Infantries. The consignor relates that the flag was found among Muir's belongings, but the family had no further information to provide regarding its history.
