Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. An embroidered and appliqued pictorial quilt of Civil War interest.
88 x 67 1/2 in. quilt comprised of nine squares depicting historically significant homes and monuments in Washington, DC, and Virginia. Featured near center are two squares, the first showing the Bushong House near New Market, VA, “where the greatest casualties occurred at the Battle,” dated May 1864. Confederate flags flank each side of the home. The second square depicts Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, flanked by the Grand Union flag and the 13-star American flag. The two central squares are surrounded by seven squares depicting additional homes and residences of note, including: The White House. -- Lincoln’s Cabin. -- Washington’s Headquarters, Winchester, VA. -- Home of Daniel Morgan – renowned Indian Fighter, Winchester, VA. -- The Old Stone House , the oldest church in Richmond. – Confederate Monument, Woodstock, VA. – Old Time Plantation, “Negro Quarters,” as identified on square., near Markham, East Virginia, with the cracked Liberty Bell included in the square. – Smith Creek Baptist Church, used as a hospital by Confederate and Union armies. – The Lincoln Memorial. – Wissen Mill, “Only mill not burnt in Shenandoah Valley during Civil War,” near Woodstock, VA.
