15 3/4 x 24 in. printed cotton flag with 35 stars configured as a double medallion, flanked by a star in each corner. Overprint identifies the flag to the "71st New York Vol. Inft." and documents Civil War battles: "Bull Run / Fredericksburg / Chancellorsville / Gettysburg."

Comprised of companies from New York City, Olean, Great Valley, Colchester and Kingston, NY, Newark and Orange, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA, the 71st New York Volunteers was organized at Camp Scott, Staten Island, between June and July, 1861, for a three-year term. The regiment was assigned to the 2nd Excelsior brigade, under the command of General Daniel Sickles, and saw extensive action in Virginia and Pennsylvania throughout the war. The 71st NY fought in several significant battles, including 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg, before mustering out at New York City on 30 July 1864.
