Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Presidential pardon acknowledgement and oath of allegiance for Virginian ex-Confederate Samuel P. Wilson, Esq. 1865.
2 documents, being true copies of a pardon acknowledgement and an oath of allegiance, both separately enclosed in partly-printed official Department of State certifications bearing original seals, stamp signatures of William H. Seward, and respective dates of 23 October and 3 November 1865. Accompanied by a postally used official Department of State envelope addressed to Samuel P. Wilson of Danville, VA, with Department of State wax seal.
7 5/8 x 9 3/4 in., separations with taped repair, 2 holes punched to left edge, minor spotting. Partly-printed acknowledgement of receipt of the President's Warrant of Pardon. Pittsylvania, VA, 23 October 1865. In part: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the Presidents Warrant of Pardon bearing date 15th July, 1865, and hereby signify my acceptance of the same, with all the conditions therein specified. Ink inscription below reads, "Please forward to Saml P. Wilson, Danville, Virginia."
7 3/4 x 9 7/8 in., separations with taped repair, dampstaining to bottom right corner, 2 holes punched to left edge. Manuscript oath of allegiance sworn to and subscribed by Samuel P. Wilson on 23 October 1865 before a notary public. In part: "I Samuel P. Wilson, of said county do solemnly swear in the presence of Almighty God that I will henceforth faithfully support and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of the States thereunder, and that I will in like manner abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the late rebellion, with reference to the emancipation of slaves."
