Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Ninth plate ambrotypes showing Confederate soldier Timothy W. Knights, 136th Militia Virginia Infantry, and his expectant wife Mary Knights.
2 ninth plate ambrotypes featuring studio portraits of Timothy W. Knight(s) and Mary M. Knight(s), each housed in full cases with period pencil identifications on enclosed papers. Timothy's image contains a lock of hair. Period identification reads: "Timothy W. Knights and Mary M. Kagey was married the 15 of January 1861" The couple lived in Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah Co., Virginia.
Timothy Knights (1837-1907) enlisted in Co. B., 136th Militia VA Infantry, and was ordered into CSA service by General J.E. Johnston, 19 July 1861. He was detailed to Winchester, VA, stationed at Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society near town, 23 August 1861, and discharged there 9 September 1861. He died 27 May 1907, and is buried in Charles Town, Jefferson Co., West Virginia.
Mary Magdalene (Kagey) Knights (1842-1907) is shown in the ambrotype wearing a dress with wedding ring, obviously pregnant with hands over belly. Period identification reads: "Timothy W. Knights, Mary M. Knights, March 16, 1861: Remember me When this you see 1861." Mary died 17 December 1907, and is buried with Timothy at Charles Town, WV.
