Lot Description
GRABILL, John C.H. (1849-1903), photographer. Photograph of General Nelson Miles and his staff viewing a Lakota camp after Wounded Knee, January 1891.
9 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount with J.C.H. Grabill's copyright information and advertisement printed along the right edge. Identified in negative, "No. 3526 Gen. Miles and Staff. Viewing the largest hostile Indian Camp in the US near Pine Ridge, SD, Jan. 16, 1891."
Taken two weeks after the Wounded Knee disaster, this image is one of series taken by Grabill showing Miles, often accompanied by William F. Cody, viewing the Lakota encampments around Pine Ridge.
