Lot Description
[WOUNDED KNEE]. Four photographs taken in the immediate aftermath of Wounded Knee, incl. views of the slain bodies of Chief Big Foot and the Medicine Man.
4 photographs, approx. 5 1/2 x 7 3/8 in. or smaller, on cardstock mounts. Three with the verso imprint of the Northwestern Photographic Company of Chadron, Nebraska.
Includes the following scenes, as titled in the negatives: "Chief Big Foot Killed in the Battle at Wounded Knee with his Full Band By the 7th Cav. Dec. 28th 1890." -- The frozen body of Big Foot on the snow-covered battle field, 1 January 1891. Marked in the neg., "Big Foot." -- "The Medicine Man, taken at the Battle of Wounded Knee.” Several deceased men are visible, including a man who appears to have burned. His arms are raised to the sky while a carbine rifle rests against his torso. -- "View at Wounded Knee," showing men on horseback overlooking the snow-covered battlefield, several deceased men visible throughout. -- Together, 4 photographs.
