Lot Description
[WOUNDED KNEE]. Four photographs taken in the immediate aftermath of Wounded Knee, incl. Lt. Sydney Cloman on the battlefield surrounded by dead Lakota members of Big Foot’s Band. January 1891.
4 photographs, approx. 5 7/8 x 8 in. or smaller. One on cardstock mount credited on recto to Trager & Kuhn, Chadron, Nebraska, and three credited in the negative or on verso to the Northwestern Photographic Company, Chadron, Nebraska, which acquired the negatives from George Trager.
Includes the following scenes: View of a mounted Lieutenant Sydney A. Cloman, 1st US Infantry, posing amongst the bodies that are scattered across the snow-covered battlefield. Lower margin of mount inscribed in period hand, "Lt. Cloman - Horse standing where first shot was fired." -- "Bird's Eye View of Battlefield at Wounded Knee, S.D., looking North." -- "Gathering up the Dead at the Battle of Wounded Knee, S.D." -- "Burial of the Dead at the Battle of Wounded Knee, S.D.," copyrighted in the negative 1 January 1891.
Together, 4 photographs produced from the graphic negatives made by George Trager on or near New Year's Day 1891, just five days after the Wounded Knee Massacre.
