The Battle of Wounded Knee was the massacre of nearly 300 Lakota Indians by the 7th US Cavalry during the Pine Ridge Campaign. The event took place near Wounded Knee Creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota on 29 December 1890. Trager was the first photographer on the scene in the aftermath of the massacre in January 1891 and took several photographs as US troops began collecting and burying bodies that were on the battlefield.
