Lot Description
AUDERTON & CULVER, photographers. Stereoview of Hunkpapa Chief Long Dog and George Wills, B Troop, Northwest Mounted Police. Ca 1876.
Stereoview on cardstock mount, verso with studio imprint of "Auderton & Culver, North-West Territories and Canada," and manuscript notations identifying the subjects as Long Dog, or Sunka Hanske, who was one of Sitting Bull's "Chiefs of Police," and George Wills of B Troop, Northwest Mounted Police. A rare view of Long Dog seated with George Wills while at Fort Walsh, where Wills served from 1876 to 1881. After the 1876 victory at Little Bighorn, Long Dog was among the Lakota who accompanied Sitting Bull into exile in Canada to evade the US Army. Research suggests that this may be the only definite surviving image of a Lakota male taken during Sitting Bull's time in Canada. (Information obtained from www.American-Tribes.com.)
While this image has also been attributed to W.J. Oliver, a photographer who had a studio in Calgary during the 1880s and who may have collected the stereo, it was more than likely taken by George W. Auderton, or Anderton, who was located at Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan, ca 1876-1878.
