Lot Description
HOWARD, Charles (b. ca 1842-?), photographer. Three photographs of Fort Fetterman, Wyoming Territory, incl. camp of the 2nd Cavalry near the North Platte River.
3 albumen photographs, each approx. 11 x 8 1/4 in. on 14 x 11 in. mounts with Howard's imprint below image. Includes: A view of Fort Fetterman taken from long range, with buildings and earthen wagon trails visible in the middle/far distance of the image. Ink inscription to mount recto reads "Fort Fetterman, Wyoming Territory," and printed paper label affixed to verso reads "Quarters at Fort Fetterman, Wyoming. -- A view of the fort taken from a closer proximity, showing more details of its quarters and other components including what appears to be a long log-built structure to the viewer's right in the middle distance. -- A view of the 2nd US Cavalry camp near Fort Fetterman along the North Platte River, featuring dozens of tents in the middle distance and a few men venturing near the water's edge nearer the foreground. Ink inscription to mount recto reads "Camp - 2nd Cavalry near Fort Fetterman, Wyo. Ty. North Platte River."
Charles Howard captured these images as part of the 1877 Stanton Expedition while he was serving as a private with the 4th US Infantry
