KELLY, R.L. (1851-1934), photog. A group of 5 cabinet cards of Native American subjects, incl. Spotted Eagle. Pierre, South Dakota, ca 1880s.
5 cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts, each with R.L. Kelly's Pierre, South Dakota imprint, ca 1880s. Some subjects identified in the negative.
Includes: Spotted Eagle, Lakota, holding a tacked three-bladed knife club. Research suggests that Spotted Eagle participated in Little Bighorn. -- Little Bull, Cheyenne. -- Three Sioux men. -- Young Sioux female subject wearing a beaded dentalium shell shirt and long dentalium shell and leather earrings, richly toned. -- House in Pierre [South Dakota].
Together, 5 cabinet photographs by R.L. Kelly, a Canadian native who studied photography and operated a studio in Hamilton, Ontario, before moving to Pierre, Dakota Territory, to open a studio in 1881.
