Lot Description
[BARRY, David F. (1854-1934), photographer]. Cabinet card of Chief John Grass and American fur trader Alexander Faribault.
Cabinet photograph, studio portrait of Alexander Faribault standing with Chief John Grass, who wears traditional Native dress. The image is unmarked but was taken by D.F. Barry, ca 1880s.
Many think Lakota Chief John Grass was the mastermind behind the victory at the battle of the Little Bighorn. At the death of Sitting Bull he became the principal chief of the Hunkpapa.
Alexander Faribault, son of John Baptiste and Pelegie Faribault, was a second generation fur trader, working with the American Fur Company. He served as a government interpreter at the treaties of 1851, as a representative to the territorial legislature, and as the first postmaster of Faribault, which he helped to found. (Information obtained from the Rice County Historical Society website.)
