Lot Description
[CUSTER, George Armstrong]. Cabinet card of Osage scout identified as "Howard Mandan" who served with Custer at the Battle of Washita. Fort A. Lincoln, DT: M.A. Breese & Co.
Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount, applied paper label on verso identified to "M.A. Breese & Co.," with a list of titles included in "Collection No. 14" from their "Pictures of the Most Noted Indians, Fort A. Lincoln, D.T." While the image was published by Breese & Co., it may have been originally taken by O.S. Goff. An inscribed, applied paper label on mount recto identifies the subject as "Howard Mandan," and an additional inked notation on verso states that he was "killed by Crees." The scout is shown seated with a sword in hand.
Research indicates that the subject was also known as "Charging Hawk" and served with George Custer at the Battle of the Washita in November 1868. (Information obtained from www.American-Tribes.com.)
Provenance: The Estate Collection of E.F. Mueller; Heritage, 11 December 2012, Lot 38737.
