Lot Description
MORROW, Stanley J. (1843-1921), photographer. A group of 19 stereoviews from General Crook's Expedition and the Black Hills series, incl. reenactment of the 1876 "Starvation March."
19 stereoviews, nearly all cabinet-sized and on yellow mounts, each bearing S. J. Morrow's Yankton, Dakota Territory imrpint. Most from his "Views of General Crook's Expedition and the Black Hills" series. Nearly all feature Morrow's printed series label on verso with corresponding image number and caption notated.
In September 1876, photographer S.J. Morrow of Yankton, D.T., met troops from Gen. George Crook's command as they approached Deadwood at the end of their long trek from the Little Bighorn. Wary after the recent Custer massacre, his troops marched very slowly, extending the length of their trip and causing them to run out of rations.
Morrow took thirty-one views that he marketed as "Gen. Crook's Expedition and the Black Hills." With his pictures, Morrow helped popularize the nickname of the expedition as the "Horsemeat March."
The lot is highlighted by 5 stereoviews depicting soldiers' reenactments of events on this 1876 march, including the following titles: Soldier shooting abandoned horses, for meat. -- Soldiers cutting up abandoned horse. -- Soldiers carrying Off Horse Meat. -- Soldiers Fighting over Horse Meat (2 images). -- 3 with ink signature and/or estate stamp of P.T. Buckley on verso.
Additional titles from the series include: Gen. Crook's Army in camp at Point of Rocks, near Buffalo Gap, Black H. -- Troops passing old stockade, French Creek. -- Cinching (loading) Pack Mule with flour. -- Maj. Noyes and Officers of 2d Cavalry. -- Stretcher with wounded man, from Battle of Slim Buttes. -- Infantry Camp in Wickyups, on Whitewood. -- Sioux captured at the battle of Slim Buttes. -- Supply Train in Corrall, near Custer City. -- Bear Rock, from S, near Custer City. -- Fifth Cavalry leaving Custer City. -- And 2 untitled views.
Also included are 2 views from Morrow's "Photographic Gems from the Great Northwest" series, including General Merritt's H. Q. in the field on Whitewood. -- And Army in camp (in Wick-ups) on French Creek.
