Lot Description
CHAMBERLAIN, W.G. (1815-1910), photographer. CDV of Manuelito, Navajo warrior. Denver, CO, ca 1860s.
CDV on cardstock mount with verso imprint of W.G. Chamberlain, Denver, Colorado. An intimate portrait of "Navajoe [sic] Manuelito Jr. 14 years old," as identified in period hand on verso. He holds a bow, and the strap of a quiver is visible. While not a copy, it is unclear if Chamberlain took this image. Manuelito and his followers surrendered to Federal authorities at Fort Wingate in 1866, and were removed to Bosque Redondo. This image was probably taken about that time. Provenance: Cowan's, American History, 19 June 2009, Lot 664.
