Lot Description

JACKSON, William Henry (1843-1942), photographer]. A group of 3 CDVs of Pawnee scouts, incl. Red Shirt and White Horse.


3 CDVs on cardstock mounts, each with verso imprint of Jackson Bros., Omaha, Nebraska. Subjects include: A portrait of a man wrapped in a blanket wearing a series of elaborate earrings. Verso with pencil inscription identifying him as "Red Shirt / Pawnee." Provenance: American Indian Photography Collection of John W. Painter (1929-2008); Cowan's, American History, 24 July 2019, Lot 214.

"White Horse," Pawnee. A portrait of a man in profile wearing a military jacket, holding a pistol and tomahawk. Provenance: Dave Delling Collection of Western Americana; Cowan's, Historic Americana, 9 June 2007, Lot 105.

Studio portrait of Pawnee scouts. The men were likely brothers or cousins, as relatives always went to war together. Both are wrapped in buffalo robes. The man at left wears the pride of the Pawnee Scouts, a US Army-issued Colt revolver in a black leather holster.
