Lot Description

GARDNER, Alexander (1821-1882), photographer. Albumen photograph of High Wolf, Tchan-Gm-Ani-Tah-An Ka-Ti-Ah. Washington, DC.


5 1/4 x 4 in. albumen photograph, tipped on ornately scrolled Blackmore Museum mount, 12 x 10 in., ca 1870. The portrait shows High Wolf, or Tchan-gm-ani-tah-an ka-ti-ah, an Oglala Dakota man, wearing a hide warrior shirt decorated with beadwork, a bone breast plate, and a hat. Lower margin of mount with credit to A. Gardner, Washington, DC, and imprint, "Photographed by Trustees of Blackmore Museum, Salisbury, England."
