Lot Description
BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer. A group of 4 CDVs of Native American delegations, incl. Ojibwe and Sac and Fox Indians.
4 CDVs on cardstock mounts, three credited to Brady/Anthony and one unmarked, but attributed to Brady as well.
Scenes include: The Ojibwe Delegation meeting with Methodist Missionary, Reverend J.H. Pitezel, who stands at far left, ca 1867. Native subjects include Mongosid (Loon Foot), Mongosee (Little Loon), Marji-gesick, Charley Kawbawgam, Assinins (Little Stone), Mokwada (One Who Does Not Walk), Ma-dosh, Kishkitawag, Matchi-kwisen (Bad Boy). Verso with Brady/Anthony imprint and 2-cent US Internal Revenue stamp. -- Studio portrait of five Native subjects with penciled notation on verso that appears to read, " Pottawatomi Chiefs," although no further information has been discovered about the photograph. Verso with 2-cent US Internal Revenue stamp, no backmark. -- Studio view possibly showing some of the same subjects in the previous portrait, although a penciled notation on verso suggests the image was taken at the Sanitary Fair in Chicago. However, research indicates this was also taken by Brady in Washington, DC, ca 1862. Print with Brady's "MB" blindstamp in the lower right and left corners. -- Studio portrait of Sac and Fox Indians, possibly including Moses Keokuk and Shawpawcawcaugh, ca 1868. Verso with "Martin's Photographic Gallery, St. Paul, Minn." paper label pasted over Brady/Anthony imprint.
Together, 4 CDVs.
