Lot Description
GARDNER, Alexander (1821-1882), photographer. CDV of the Sauk and Fox delegation. Washington, DC: Philip & Solomons, February 1867.
CDV on cardstock mount with Gardner's Washington, DC imprint on verso. Variant of a CDV illustrated in Witness to an Era: The Life and Photographs of Alexander Gardner by D. Mark Katz (p. 236). Taken in Washington, DC, in February 1867, this rare photograph of the Sauk and Fox delegation represents one of Gardner's first commissions to photograph Indian delegations that were visiting the capital with great frequency (see Katz, p. 235 for more information).
