Lot Description

[GOLD RUSH]. The Way They Raise a California Outfit. New York: N. Currier, 1849.

8 3/4 x 11 7/8 in. lithograph (sight), matted and framed to 22 x 25 1/4 in. Title and copyright printed beneath image, along with caption reading, "Here—saay—take the pair fur four shilln:—you wont? Well what-'ll you give—saay. I'm bound to sell um, 'cause I'm up Kaleforny.—" Featured is a man dressed in tattered clothing, holding up two scrawny chickens. A ragged woman sits in a wagon led by a bony horse in the background. Text beneath the horse reads, "Overland route too Kalofoney."

This is one of a series of six prints produced by Currier satirizing various aspects of the rush for gold.
