Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. CDV portrait of Olive Oatman, taken and held captive by Native Americans for 5 years. Rochester, NY: Powelson.
CDV on cardstock mount (horizontal creasing appearing to be from previous fold at center, soiling throughout, wear to edges and corners of print and mount). Verso bears Powelson's 58 State Street imprint.
Oatman (1837-1903) was famously captured by the Yavapai in Arizona at the age of 13, and was then sold to the Mojave. She was tattooed on her chin, marking her as a slave. Oatman was ransomed at Fort Yuma in 1856, and thereafter lived the rest of her life in California and New York.
Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
