Lot Description

[POLITICS]. 37-star "McKinley and Hobart" campaign flag. 1867-1896.

Approx. 56 by 105 in. wool flag with 37 double-appliquéd cotton stars hand sewn to a wool canton, configured in horizontal rows 7/8/7/8/7, with wool stripes that appear to be hand sewn. Cotton panel at fly end stenciled, "McKinley and Hobart." Cotton hoist with three whip-stitched eyelets, jute rope tied to each end, and maker's stamp, "Lamprell & Marble, Maker, 837 Court St., Boston." The hoist is also thrice stamped "Mastai Collection #28."

A rare flag banner created to be displayed vertically at a political event promoting William McKinley and Garret Hobart's 1896 presidential campaign. See Collins, Threads of History, fig. 737, p. 305, for a similar, 38-star printed flag banner.

Provenance: The Collection of Boleslaw and Marie-Louise d'Otrange Mastai; Sotheby's, Important Americana, 2002, Lot 118; South Bay Auctions, n.d., Lot 116; Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
