Lot Description

[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION]. A photographic study of John Wilkes Booth in 16 CDVs.


16 CDVs of Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. The group is comprised of portraits of Booth taken during various sittings. Photographers/publishers include Alexander Gardner, Washington, DC (1), C.D. Fredricks & Co., New York (4), T.R. Burnham, Boston, MA (2), E.H. McKenney, Biddeford, ME (1), J. Carbutt, Chicago, IL (1), Groom's Photograph Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (1). The rest are uncredited.

Some cartes include period notations on recto or verso, the most detailed written on the reverse side of an image of Booth standing in a studio setting, his arm resting on a pedestal. The inscription reads, in part, "John Wilkes Booth, Captured on Garritt [sic] Farm at Port Royal, VA, Apr. 25, 1865, for the assniation [sic] of President Lincoln..."
