Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Large format albumen photograph of the Old Capitol in Springfield draped in mourning.

8 1/2 x 6 5/8 in. photograph on slightly larger cardstock mount (toning, spotting, a few abrasions, lifts, and small tears to print; mount with toning, spotting, and wear to edges and corners). Uncredited.

Pencil inscription on verso reads, "Mr. Lincoln lay in state for viewing in this Building for several days before burial."

A similar image appears in Twenty Days, captioned: "Black and white mourning cloth, brought by the wagonload, was spiraled over the copper dome and down the columns of the old State House where Lincoln had tried more than two hundred cases" (p. 254).
