Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Large format albumen group portrait of Civil War officers, most wearing Lincoln mourning badges and bands.

13 1/8 x 9 7/8 in. albumen photograph mounted to 16 1/4 x 13 in. (minimal toning, crisp print; mount with some toning, dampstaining, and wear to edges and corners). Uncredited, but with two 5-cent revenue stamps on verso, each with inked inscription reading, "L & Son[?]"

The men in this group portrait pose before large lattice panels making up the walls of a porch or entryway to a house. Nearly all of them wear shoulder straps, most visibly indicating a rank of first lieutenant or higher. While it is unclear what regiment they serve, many also appear to be wearing crepe bands or cockade pins, paying tribute to the assassinated president.

Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
