Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. 3 CDVs of Abraham Lincoln taken by BRADY and BERGER in January and February, 1864.

BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer. A vignetted portrait of Abraham Lincoln from a negative originally taken by Mathew Brady, 8 January 1864 (O-87). Recto imprint of Bradley & Rulofson, San Francisco, CA. Lincoln said of this particular portrait: "I don't know that I have any favorite portrait of myself; but I have thought that if I looked like any of the likenesses of me that have been taken, I look most like that one" (Ostendorf, p. 170).

[BERGER, Anthony, photographer]. 2 CDVs of Lincoln, including the famous profile portrait, taken by Anthony Berger, manager of Brady's Gallery, Washington, DC, 9 February 1864 (See O-88/89 and O-91). The images represent two of seven poses taken by Berger on 9 February, and Lincoln purportedly walked more than a mile for this sitting. The artist Victor D. Brenner used the profile portrait, along with another, to model the Lincoln-head cent.

Together, 3 CDVs.

Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
