Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Partially printed document signed as President. Washington, DC, 16 July 1861.
17 1/2 x 11 1/4 in., creasing from folded storage, with some separations at crease intersections, some age toning and soiling, with light wear and wrinkling to edges and corners. Embossed seal to lower left portion of document.
Signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, and co-signed ("William H. Seward") as Secretary of State. Appointing Stillman E. Dana as Postmaster of Portage City, Wisconsin for a term of 4 years.
Dana's appointment is recorded on p. 408 of the Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America from December 6, 1858, to August 6, 1861, Inclusive. The entry, dated 10 July 1861, reads, in part: "I nominate Stillman E. Dana to be deputy postmaster at Portage City, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, in place of C. A. Britt, removed, the said S. E. Dana having been appointed during the last recess of the Senate." The earlier appointment referenced in this entry appeared at auction in 2016, bearing a date of 8 April 1861, but it is not included here.
Dana would serve in this post for around 10 years, being re-appointed by President Johnson in 1865.
