Lot Description

[WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799)]. Illustrated broadside extolling and memorializing George Washington. Philadelphia: J. Maxwell, 1811.

Folio sheet, 1p, 16 x 20 1/2 in., with 10 1/2 x 5 in. copper plate engraving by George Murray above text (scattered spotting and dampstaining, creasing, approx. 1 x 12 in. portion of left margin trimmed not affecting text). Engraving with decorative octagonal border draped with an oak leaf and acorn garland, and a wave-battered rock bearing the name "Washington." A reprint of a broadside first published in London, 1799, by W.S. Blake.

Published just over a decade after the death of George Washington, this memorial broadside features a printed eulogy for the beloved first President. Text reads, in small part: "General Washington, placed in circumstances of the most trying difficulty at the commencement of the American contest, accepted that situation which was preeminent in danger and responsibility. His perseverance overcame every obstacle; his moderation conciliated every opposition; his genius supplied every resource...His fame, bounded by no country, will be confined to no age. The character of General Washington will be transmitted to posterity, and the memory of his virtues, while patriotism and virtue are held sacred among men, will remain undiminished."
