Lot Description

[ENSLAVEMENT]. 4 CDVs of the Mississippi plantations of Joseph Emory and Jeff Davis, featuring enslaved persons.

Intimate view of a group featuring mostly women and girls engaged in some kind of craft in a shaded area just outside of the house. One African American woman stands in the background, seemingly present to attend to the white subjects. Vicksburg, MS: Washington Gallery, n.d. -- Large group portrait of approximately 40 African American men, women, and children posed in front of the library pavilion at Hurricane Plantation. They are likely the enslaved population of the plantation owned by Joseph Emory Davis. N.p., n.d. -- An exterior view of the main house at Brierfield Plantation, where Jefferson Davis resided prior to the Civil War. The porch columns feature an upside down American flag and the house bears bold lettering spelling out, "The House That Jeff Built." A camera is visible in the foreground, and a small group of men and women can be seen standing on the porch. Vicksburg, MS: Joslyn & Smith, n.d. -- Exterior view of an unknown structure, with a group of approximately 10 African American subjects gathered on the covered porch to the viewer's right. Verso pencil inscription reads, "Joe & Jeff Davis Plantation / Hospt & prison for slaves / Palmyra Bend." N.p., n.d. -- Together, 4 CDVs.
