Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Trio of Yale albums, dated 1856, 1860, & 1868, ft. individual and group portraits, scenes around campus, and inscriptions from classmates incl. many soldiers.


11 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. album (detached front cover, album fully separated in half, pages completely disbound from spine) with gilt lettering identifying it to "John C. Price / Class of 1856" on front cover. Contains several engravings of campus and faculty members, and more than 85 salt print portraits of classmates, each with signed and inscribed note to Price on opposing page. Accompanied by a CDV engraving of a raucous gathering of what appear to be men and devils or other supernatural beings, with banner above reading "Yale / Initiation / Freshman," and below reading "Secret Societies." 11 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. album (detached front cover and front free endpapers) with gilt illustration of Eli Yale on front cover and interior details that identify the album to Edward B. Furbish, Class of 1860. Contains several engravings of campus, surrounding areas, and faculty members, some of whom have signed opposing pages, and more than 60 portraits of classmates, about half of which are engravings and half of which are tipped in photographs, nearly all with accompanying signed inscriptions to Furbish. Last two used pages of album featured tipped in photographic group portraits of sports teams or clubs. Many of the pages bearing signed inscriptions feature an engraving of a skull and crossbones with "322" below, signifying membership in or referring to the secretive undergraduate society, Skull and Bone. Accompanied by an AQS to Furbish from his classmate Theodore L. B. Howe. New Haven, CT, 7 March 1857.

Reverend Edward B. Furbish (1837-1918) graduated Yale in 1860 at the age of 25, after which he volunteered to serve as chaplain of the 25th Maine Infantry in September of 1862 He held this position until mustering out with his regiment in March of 1863.

13 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. album (lacking spine, both covers detached) with gilt script reading "Yale" on front cover, and interior details that identify the album as an 1868 yearbook. Contains 146 tipped in photographs, each with credit to Warren printed in the negative on or below image, being portraits of faculty members and students, group portraits, and outdoor views of buildings and sights around campus. Most subjects have signed their names beneath their imagesSome of the students wear a skull and crossbones pin in their portrait, likely indicating membership in the secretive undergraduate society, Skull and Bones.
