Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. CDV album related to Curtis O. Luce, inventor of agricultural implements, incl. images of his hay rakes.
CDV album containing 50 images including CDVs and tintypes, including gem-sized portraits. Most images are from-life, but engravings of some subjects including Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are also included. Highlights include: a sixth plate tintype featuring the "First Hay rake invented by C. O. Luce." -- CDV featuring the "Improved rake by C. O. Luce as used today." -- CDV bust portrait of Curtis O. Luce sporting notable sideburns. -- Sixth plate tintype seated portrait of Curtis's wife Theresa A. Kimball Luce. -- CDV standing portrait of James Kimball of California, the brother of Theresa Luce, wearing a western-style shirt, hat, riding boots, and holster with handgun. He casually leans on the upturned barrel of a long gun. -- CDV-sized tintype portrait of a young boy identified as Don C. Luce, the son of Curtis and Theresa Luce. -- CDV portrait of an older Don C. Luce. -- And others including many portraits of members of the Kimball family.
Curtis O. Luce (1818-1905) married Theresa Luce (nee Kimball) in 1848. They had a son together, Don Curtis Luce (1853-1929).
Curtis Luce's obituary in the St. Albans Weekly Messenger (VT), dated 23 March 1905, read: "Mr. Luce had been a resident of Brandon for many years and was for a number of years engaged in the manufacture of agricultural implements."
