Lot Description

A Chinese Cizhou Slip-Decorated 'Horse' Jar, Ming Dynasty
明 磁州窯天馬罐
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)

The spherical jar with short neck and flared lip featuring a flying horse rendered in dark brown and brown slip against a cream slip ground, the horse’s powerful musculature is accentuated by carved outlines, creating a dynamic sense of movement.
Note:
For a jar of similar form, see the example in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London #CIRC.578-1927, see also the horse-decorated jar of different form, #FE.174-1974. See also a similar horse jar formerly in the collection of George Eumorfopoulos, now in the British Museum, #1936,1012.41, where it is noted that such jars "are rarely seen in public collections and very few have been published". Compare also the crane-decorated jar, sold at Galerie Zacke, Vienna, October 17, 2024, lot 146.
Height 7 1/4 in., 18.9 cm.
