Three Japanese Gold Lacquer Covered Boxes, 19th Century
19th Century
The first of hexagonal form, the exterior finely decorated with a continuous garden scene with pavilions; the interior fitted with a single hexagonal tray painted with a mountainous landscape, the interior and underside finished in nashiji. The second of quatrefoil tiered form, the cover centered with a quatrefoil panel enclosing two quails beneath reeds, the four sides each with shaped reserves enclosing flowering plants; the interior fitted with four small clam-shaped covered boxes and two quatrefoil trays, the interior and underside finished in nashiji. The third was modeled as a pair of shells, the left half of the cover inlaid with hardstones depicting birds and vessels filled with flowers, the right half decorated in gold, silver, and black lacquer with blossoming chrysanthemums, the motif repeated along the sides; the interior decorated with gilt floral sprigs.
