London: Published by Smith, Elder and Co., (1838)-40. In two volumes. First edition. Parts I and II only (of five), comprising: Fossil Mammalia (Richard Owen, [1838]-1840) and Mammalia (George R. Waterhouse, 1839). 4to. (ii), iv, iv, 111, (1); (iv), ix, (3), 97, (1) pp.; errata at B1 in second volume; half-title in Part II. Illustrated with 32 lithographed plates (including one large folding plate) in Part I, and 32 hand-colored lithographed plates and three steel-engraved plates in Part II. Contemporary three-quarter tan calf over marbled paper-covered boards, red and green morocco spine labels, stamped in blind and in gilt, extremities and boards scuffed and worn, front board of each volume detached, spines dry and chipped, lower label of second volume largely perished; speckled red edges; light spotting and toning to text leaves; wear along edges of large folding plate, two closed tears in gutter of same with partial tape repairs; foxing to plates II-IV in first volume; scattered light to moderate foxing to remaining plates in first volume and scattered throughout second volume. The important zoological reports obtained from the voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle, edited and superintended by Charles Darwin. Originally appearing in 19 numbers, published between February 1838 and October 1843, Darwin, as well as editing the work, contributed a preface to the whole, as well as a geological introduction to the Fossil Mammalia, and a geographical introduction to the Mammalia.
