Lot Description

[Americana] Jay, John. Group of 2 Autograph Documents

(New York), ca. 1792-94. Two bifolium sheets, sizes vary. Autograph documents signed in-text by John Jay: one recording amounts paid by the creditors of Peter DuBois, and the other listing transactions from the Estate of Ann Chambers. Creasing from old folds, scattered ink stains. One document with significant loss at bottom margin, but not affecting text.

A pair of autograph documents by Founding Father John Jay (1745-1829), first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, signed in text during his tenure. Jay was appointed by George Washington to the office of Chief Justice in 1789, serving until his resignation in 1795.

Prominent estates or individuals listed among the transactions include James Duane, Pierre Van Cortlandt, James De Peyster, John Charlton, Elizabeth Livingston, and more. Ann Chambers was the late widow of John Chambers (1710-1764), former Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and John Jay's uncle and namesake.
