First edition (Smith's first issue, second state: with Stave I, red and blue title-page dated 1843, green endpapers, and text uncorrected, except with faint period present after "gloom" in line 22, p. 21). 12mo. Illustrated with a hand-colored engraved frontispiece, three hand-colored engraved plates, and four in-text engravings, by John Leech. Finely bound in full purple levant, decorated in gilt; all edges gilt, faint stain in top edge; marbled endpapers; by Root & Son; original green endpapers bound in at front and rear; original light brown cloth bound in at rear; a few very small repairs in edges of plates; contemporary ownership signature on rear green endpaper.
