First edition (Smith's second issue, with "Stave One", red and blue title-page dated 1843, yellow endpapers, and with text uncorrected, except with faint period present after "gloom" in line 22, p. 21). 12mo. Illustrated with a hand-colored engraved frontispiece, three hand-colored engraved plates, and four in-text engravings, by John Leech. Publisher's light brown cloth-covered boards, decorated in blind and in gilt (Todd's first impression, second issue, first state), cocked, wear to spine ends, split in upper and lower front joint, soiling to boards; all edges gilt; ownership signature on front paste-down; scattered spotting to text; offsetting from plates; gutter split at pp. 64-65.
