Lot Description
[Children's & Illustrated] Harris, Joel Chandler. Typed Manuscript of "Brother Rabbit, Brother Fox and Two Fat Pullets"
(Atlanta, Georgia, ca. 1906). Original and complete typed manuscript, initialed by Harris ("J.C.H."), for his story "Brother Rabbit, Brother Fox and Two Fat Pullets". 4to. Comprising six typed pages (rectos only), titled in black ink by Harris and with several of his corrections in black ink. Bound in full brown morocco, decorated in gilt; gilt dentelles; calligraphic title-page at front (in an unknown hand); typed sheets toned; in quarter green levant slip case and chemise, monogram of Milton E. Getz in gilt on lower board of slip case.
a rare and original typed manuscript by American folklorist and author Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) of one of his popular Uncle Remus stories, Brother Rabbit, Brother Fox and Two Fat Pullets. First published in the Metropolitan Magazine in March, 1906, it later appeared in Harris' posthumous collection Uncle Remus Returns (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1918).
Lot includes a charming autograph letter laid in, signed by Harris to Horace Elisha Scudder (ca. 1838-1902), editor of The Atlantic Monthly, dated December 14, no year (before 1900), on The Constitution stationery.
